Conditions

The conditions for the validity of the prayer are:
- Being in a state of ritual purity. For women this also means not being in a state of menstruation [detailed in the “Purification” section].
- That one’s clothes, body, and place of prayer be free of filth (nijāsa) beyond the excused amount
- Clothing one’s nakedness. For the male, this is from the navel down to and including the knees. For the female, it is her entire body except her face, her hands up to the wrists, and her feet (below the ankles).
- Facing the qiblah (direct of the Ka’bah in Makkah)
- The entrance of the prayer time (and within the allotted time)
- Making an intention before beginning the prayer (the place of which is in the heart)
- Pronouncing the opening invocation, knowing as the Tahrīmah (opening takbīr: saying “Allāhu Akbar”; the place of which is on the tongue). In the obligatory prayers this must be done standing, if one is able to stand without genuine hardship.
