COMMON QUESTIONS · TOPIC 3 OF 6
What changes when traveling?
Learning note · An introductory overview; detailed rulings may differ by school.
Travel can change how prayers are performed. Shortening (qasr) concerns the four-unit obligatory prayers: Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha. It does not shorten Fajr or Maghrib.
Combining (jam‘) and shortening are different concessions. The schools differ about qualifying travel distance, intention to stay, the point at which travel begins, and which circumstances allow combining. Hanafi guidance generally does not permit actual combining outside the specified Hajj situations.
Before a journey
Ask for guidance with your route, departure time, length of stay, and ability to stop. Plan around local time zones and real opportunities to stand, purify, and face the qiblah. A moving vehicle is not automatically a reason to skip a prayer.
