FOUNDATIONS
Why the quality of prayer matters
The five daily prayers are the foundation, rather than the limit, of a believer’s effort. Completing their outward form and praying with a present heart are related but distinct concerns. A prayer may fulfill its legal requirements while losing much of the attention and benefit for which it was established.
Khushūʿ gives life to the actions: praise is offered knowingly, requests are made with need, and bowing and prostration express genuine submission. Two attentive rakʿahs should not be treated as inferior merely because a different prayer is longer.
Improve both correctness and devotion. Learn the rulings of your school so uncertainty does not overwhelm you, and work on sincerity so outward correctness does not become a mechanical checklist. Avoid issuing judgments about another person’s heart from their appearance.
Which idea can you carry into your next prayer? Choose one small change, then reflect on what it helped you notice.
