BEFORE PRAYER

Build around the obligatory prayers

Regular sunnah prayers before the obligatory prayer help awaken the heart; those afterwards help nurture and complement worship. Voluntary prayers also have a role in making up shortcomings in obligatory worship, as described in Prophetic reports.

A well-known twelve-rakʿah pattern is two before Fajr, four before Dhuhr, two after Dhuhr, two after Maghrib and two after ʿIsha. Further reports encourage additional prayers, including before Asr and around Dhuhr. Schools differ in how they classify and arrange particular sunnah prayers; this pattern should not replace your school’s guidance.

The two sunnah rakʿahs of Fajr have exceptional merit. Make a sustainable plan and arrive with enough time to pray calmly. Voluntary worship does not excuse missing obligatory prayers or neglecting responsibilities.
