BEFORE PRAYER
Ask for presence, then keep practicing
Ask Allah persistently for khushūʿ, purification of the soul and excellence in worship. Among the themes of transmitted supplications are protection from an unresponsive heart, unbeneficial knowledge, an unsatisfied soul and prayer that brings no benefit.
A useful prayer to learn is Allahumma aʿinni ʿala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ʿibadatik: ask Allah to help you remember Him, thank Him and worship Him well. Outside Salah, you may also make your request in your own language.
Do not take an all-or-nothing approach. Attention rises and falls, and habits take time. Maintain the obligatory prayers, add voluntary worship gradually, and balance effort with a routine you can sustain. Repeatedly returning your attention is part of the work.
Which idea can you carry into your next prayer? Choose one small change, then reflect on what it helped you notice.
