Learn whom you are addressing

Maʿrifah is deep knowledge and awareness of Allah. He creates, provides, knows what is hidden and apparent, hears the requests of His creation, and governs their affairs with wisdom. His generosity is not exhausted by giving, and He does not need our worship. We need Him.

Develop this awareness through four connected paths: reflecting on the Qur’an, considering the signs in creation, studying His beautiful names and attributes, and worshipping Him. Knowledge increases devotion, and devotion deepens awareness.

Learn a name, understand its meaning, praise Allah and ask through it, then act on what that understanding requires. Awareness of the Ever Watchful, for example, should affect private conduct. Reflect on the sky, rain, living things and your own creation without distractions. Bring one meaning into your next prayer.
