What is required, and what is recommended?

A condition must be satisfied for prayer, such as entering its time and having the required purification. A pillar is a foundational part within it, such as bowing or prostration. Recommended acts complete and beautify the prayer.

The categories are not interchangeable across schools. Hanafi law distinguishes fard from wajib; Hanbali manuals also distinguish pillars and obligations, with different consequences when an act is forgotten. Other schools organize these details differently.

Why the distinction matters

Missing a pillar cannot simply be repaired by adding two prostrations of forgetfulness. Missing a recommended phrase does not have the same consequence. Learn the legal rank together with the action, rather than memorizing one universal list of numbers.

The detailed Salah chapter contains a detailed Hanafi classification. The Maliki correction reference illustrates why the remedy depends on the omitted act and when you remember.
