Praying with others

The imam leads; followers follow rather than move ahead. Join the congregation calmly. If you arrive late, enter the prayer with the opening takbir while standing if able, then follow the imam’s current position.

How a unit is counted, what you recite behind the imam, and how you complete missed units have detailed school-specific rules. Do not assume that entering during a sitting means you caught that unit.

Make your first visit easier

Arrive early, tell someone you are learning, and ask where to stand. Learn the congregation’s iqamah time, which is often later than the calculated beginning of the prayer window.
