Everyday situations

Praying with illness or disability

Prayer is performed according to genuine ability. The prophetic instruction includes praying standing, then sitting if unable, and on one’s side if unable to sit.

Needing a chair is not a spiritual failure. Equally, different abilities can remain: someone may be able to stand briefly but not prostrate, or bow but not kneel. Learn which movements you can perform and which gestures replace those you cannot.

A qualified teacher can apply the rules to your circumstances. A clinician can help you understand physical limits. Do not force movements that cause injury.

Purification and chronic conditions

Water use, dressings, incontinence, and ongoing bleeding have specific concessions. Their conditions and timing vary by school; ask about both purification and prayer together.
